Koshiki-no-Kata 50 minutes

The Koshiki-no-Kata refer to the kata of the Kito-Ryu of Jujutsu which Jigoro Kano Shihan studied before founding Kodokan Judo. The Koshiki-no-Kata are based on the Throwing techniques executed by armor-clad warriors on the battle field. There are 14 Omote and 7 Ura forms. Katame-waza consist of Osaekomi-waza, Shime-waza and Kansetsu-waza. Nage-waza and Katame-waza are like the two sides of a singlecoin . In order to improve your judo, it's important that you practice both. Katame-waza can be combined with Nage-waza to carry out a continuous attack. The possibilities are limitless, and so are the possibilities for continuing on from an Osaekomi-waza to a Shime-waza or Kansetsu-waza, or from a Shime-waza to a Kansetsu-waza. The Ju-no-Kata was formulated as one of Kata of Kodokan judo in l887. The gentle movements are designed to teach the fundamentals of attack and defense and will make it much easier for you to learn the principles and movements of judo. They are also an effective form of physical education. Since the forms incorporate various movements such as bending, stretching and twisting, they are very effective in conditioning the body and developing it all-round. Another advantage is that they can be practiced by men and women, young and old without having to wear special dress. The Nage-no-Kata were established to help understanding the theoretical basis of judo and learn the processes involved in "Kuzushi", "Tsukuri", "Kake" in other words, how to assume the correct position for applying a throwing, techniques once you've broken your opponent's balance and how to apply and complete a technique. The Kata consist of 15 representative throwing techniques, three from each of the follow-ing five categories; Te-waza, Koshi-waza, Ashi-waza, Masutemi-waza and Yokosutemi-waza. Each technique, is executed from both sides. This video explains the main points of the 15 techniques together with Some of,the common mistakes. It also includes historic footage dating back to c1930, of a demonstration of the Nage-no-Kata by Shuichi Nagaoka, 10th dan, a judo master known especially for his Uki-waza. The Kime-no-Kata was created around 1888 to stuy how to attack and defend however with the change in lifestyles, it became necessary to come up with a new set of kata and in 1956, the Kodokan established Goshin Jitsu-a set of 21 self-defense techniques.

The Kime-no-Kata was created around in 1888 to study how to attack and defense. However, with the change in lifestyles, it became necessary to come up with a new set of kata more suited to the times. Katame-no-Kata 60 minutes
The "Katame-no-Kata" were established during 1884 and 1885, in succession to the "Nage-no-Kata". They consist of five representative techniques each from the Osaekomi-waza, Shime-waza and Kansetsu-waza, the aim being the mastery of the theoretical basis for executing and evading each technique. In 1882, Master Jigoro Kano founded Kodokan Judo, establishing the Randori method based on Nage waza and Katame waza. Since then, theoretical research has lead to the establishment of numerous new techniques. Together, the Nage-no-Kata and the "Katame-no-Kata" from the "Randori-no-Kata," the practice of which helps in the understanding and mastery of the theory behind Randori techniques.

Itsutsu-no-Kata 20 minutes

The "Itsutsu-no-Kata" were established in 1887 by the founder of Kodokan Judo, Master Jigoro Kano. They forms the basis of Kodokan Judo. Inspired by the forms found in nature, he strived to come up with a way of expressing the forces of nature through judo. The result is the "Itsutsu-no-Kata". There are no names for the specific techniques, but the 'Itsutsu-no-Kata" comprise all the fundamental principles of Judo, applying the theoretical basis of attack and defense to natural phenomena. In that sense, they can also be appreciated from an artistic point of view.
